Cape Town – Meghan Markle paid tribute to the late UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana during the Sussex royal tour.
In honour of Uyinene, who was brutally raped and murdered in August at the Clareinch post office in Claremont, Cape Town, the Duchess of Sussex tied a yellow ribbon to the memorial during her and Prince Harry’s 10-day tour of Africa.
The ribbon has since been stolen, Daily Mail reports.
The horrific death of the 19-year-old caused nationwide outrage, sparking gender-based violence protests, and while the 38-year-old royal was in Cape Town, she visited the post office to pay her respects in private.
"We stand together in this moment. Harry & Meghan 25 September 2019," Meghan wrote in isiXhosa on the ribbon.
It’s alleged that the ribbon might’ve been taken by a royal fan.
Uyinene’s mother Noma expressed dismay at what had happened and that a tribute to her daughter was maliciously removed, Mirror reported.
"The disappearance of the ribbon is quite unfortunate and is actually a reflection of the type of society we have become," Noma said.
