The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) wants the apex court to set aside the Electoral Court's decision to allow former president Jacob Zuma to contest a seat in Parliament.
The commission's court papers, which News24 has seen, asked that the Electoral Court's order to be set aside and replaced with the following: "The application for leave to appeal [alternatively, the appeal] is dismissed."
The IEC wants the court to declare Zuma ineligible to contest the elections because he was sentenced to 15 months in jail for contempt of court.
