She didn’t think she had a chance of getting the role – she wasn’t the right ethnicity, she didn’t have the right accent and most of her career had been in comedy.

“I thought I’d be wasting everyone’s time if I even auditioned for it,” Ambika Mod says. “Then I just woke up in bed one night and I was I like, ‘I’ve made a massive mistake’.”

She called her agent the next morning and submitted an audition tape – and she hasn’t looked back since. One Day, the hit TV series based on David Nicholls’ bestselling romance novel, has become one of the most-watched shows on Netflix, rocketing into the streamer’s top 10 within days of its release.
