Cape Town - Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry are launching a mental health TV series.

The Duke of Sussex has teamed up with the media executive to launch a documentary series focusing on the stories of people who’ve battled with mental health, People reports.

Speaking during an interview with the Telegraph, the 35-year-old got candid about his past struggles with mental health and how it was Bryony Gordon's Mad World podcast that inspired him to collaborate with Oprah.

"When I did your podcast two years ago the response made me realise what an impact sharing my story could have, and what an impact other stories can have for so many who are suffering silently," he said.

Oprah and Harry are both executive producers of the series, which is set to air on Apple's streaming service in 2020.

He says he hopes the show will save lives.

"If the viewers can relate to the pain and perhaps the experience, then it could save lives as we will focus on prevention and positive outcomes," he said.

This comes after the royal opened up in 2017 about his 20-year mental health battle after being "very close to total breakdown on numerous occasions", Forbes reported.

"I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well," he admitted.

"I thought that thinking of her was only going to make me sad and not going to bring her back.

"So from an emotional side, I was, like, ‘Right, don’t ever let your emotions be part of anything.'"
