City Press review: Boity got bars?

Johannesburg - I’m sure you’re familiar with Boity Thulo. She’s a former Club 808 presenter, she’s dabbled in acting, is a health fanatic and if you bump into her around town she’s usually dressed pretty fly.

Home girl was also romantically linked to one of the most overrated rappers this country has ever bred, Cassper Nyovest. I really hope he didn’t have too much to do with Boity developing her own raps, that is of course if she writes her own.

The first time I was forced to picture Boity as some kind of, dare I say, MC was on the night of Migos’ performance last year. Nasty C brought her out for some plastic-sounding song. She was channelling Nicki Minaj with a fur jacket, but didn’t have the bars to match. Her mic control also needed some work.

Here we are this year and, with nothing other than that little performance, Boity has a single. Another thing I don’t get is how you release a single with no plans for an album. Also having a feature on your debut track doesn’t inspire hope. In SA this is cool though, in fact the streets are so laid back that you don’t even have to prove to us that you can rap any more. Just ask Nasty for a little stage time and Universal will drop your single.

But that’s all good, maybe my ass is just getting old and all these new hip-hop methods throw me. I kept an open mind as the country geared up to hear this song. I heard it and it was no better than the track they did at the Ticketpro Dome last year. At least show me that you’re doing more than joining a wave. Show me you’ve been in the studio working hard and that this is more than just another element to your brand.

She’s nicer than Cassper, though, and the track has a bit of sassiness. Boity seems comfortable with flying off at the mouth and being a little controversial, but she needs to ditch the Cardi B flow. So what now? Nicki’s swag is played out so let’s all flow like Cardi? Stop that.

She has a nice enough speaking voice, but these two don’t use one original flow on this whole track. I also feel like she’s holding back lyrically for fear that she’ll lose her snail cream endorsement. There’s no room for that in rap, look what happened to Drake catching that major loss from Pusha T. I don’t care what social media says, I still believe you have to earn your stripes the old way. So until I hear a tape Boity is just a presenter with a song, like that Katlego dude who did that weak track for Tropika Island of Treasure.
