Princess Kate and Prince William's daughter, Princess Charlotte, celebrated her ninth birthday on Thursday.

The Prince and Princess of Wales marked their second child's birthday with a new photo taken by Kate at Windsor.

The couple shared the photo on their social media platforms with the caption:

"Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte! Thank you for all of the kind messages today."

The caption also credited the photo to the Princess of Wales, who is receiving treatment for cancer and stepped away from royal duties.

Kate has described her daughter Charlotte as being feisty and "the one in charge", according to the BBC.

Last week, the royal couple also shared a photo taken by Kate of their youngest child, Prince Louis, for his sixth birthday on 23 April.

The prince and princess had previously attracted controversy following a Mother's Day photograph of Kate and her three children that was withdrawn by news agencies because it was digitally altered.

Kate later apologised for the incident and admitted that she edited the photo.

Kate and William's eldest child, Prince George's birthday is on 22 July, and he will be turning 11.
