Cape Town's iconic independent cinema, The Labia will launch a video-on-demand streaming service of curated films.
The streaming platform will launch online on Wednesday, 1 July and will be available nationwide.
The cinema temporarily closed on Monday 23 March due to the coronavirus pandemic and has remained closed for three months in adherence to the national lockdown.
"Labia Home Screen has been born out of the lockdown," says Ludi Kraus, a spokesperson for the cinema.
"We've been at home since March without any income and thought about what we could do to earn an income. We had several patrons asking us, so we thought that a streaming service would make sense. We investigated it and finally got it together, and we're hoping to launch on Wednesday."
What makes the service different is the type of content that will be available. It will have arthouse, award-winning, and foreign-language titles.
It will cost R60 to view, with the title being available for up to six hours.
Opening films include Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Clouds of Sils Maria, Tracks, Elle and Cold War.
Earlier this month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that cinemas would be allowed to reopen during lockdown Level 3.
While the details about the reopening have yet to be finalised, Ludi says that the new platform will complement what they are doing at Labia.
"We'll have our four screens there, and then we'll have a so-called fifth screen at home.
"Film festivals and film-related events will also be featured on the platform. Maybe it's part of our new normal in addition to and complementary to what we hope to continue to do at the Labia once we can reopen."
