The PSL has finally handed Mamelodi Sundowns their preferred league crowning date.
The PSL has finally handed Mamelodi Sundowns their preferred league crowning date.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been handed the opportunity to play their preferred DStv Premiership fixtures ending that allows them to be crowned champions before their home fans on May 25.

Sundowns have not had the preference of lifting the league title before their home fans in Pretoria on a weekend since May 21, 2016.

This has meant in lifting their last six titles in a row, none has been before the Yellow Nation at home on a weekend.

They were crowned champions on a Tuesday last season, lifted the 2021/22 title away at Royal AM, while the 2020/21 title was before empty seats at Loftus during the Corona virus days.

The 2019/20 was also in front of empty seats in the bio-bubble at Dobsonville Stadium.

Before that, the 2018/19 title came away at Goble Park Stadium while the 2017/18 was at the Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Fortunate for the Brazilians, is that they will get to lift the trophy in front of their home on Saturday, May 25 when they play their last league match after the PSL rearranged the club's fixtures for the umpteenth time.

The latest changes have Sundowns playing Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale on Wednesday then Royal AM on Saturday (May 11) at Loftus.

May 14 has now been allocated for the away fixture against Royal AM at Harry Gwala before they again travel to the Danie Craven Stadium on May 18.

From there, Rulani Mokwena and his team will be off to Mbombela Stadium for a date with TS Galaxy on May 21 after the fixture was brought closer by a week.

This will then have the Brazilians playing their last league match at home against Cape Town City on May 25 and being handed the league trophy on the same day.

Sundowns were confirmed as the kings of domestic football for the seventh year running after thumping Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 at FNB Stadium on Thursday.
