Being Black and South African poses a whole set of issues.

The odds seem to be stacked against thought leaders who are Black and innovation is quite often easily stomped out, especially by our elders who are still enjoying their time at the feeding trough.

Despite this and a government who are also more concerned with lining their pockets for as long as they can, some people manage to find a way to break into an industry that would rather not have them admitted.

Jerry Deeuw has done just that and his media and public relations agency, Jerry Deeuw Media is a testament.

His journey in the industry began with his education at Goronyane High School in Thaba Nchu, Free State.

“I then pursued Business Administration studies at Stanford Business College in Bloemfontein, which added depth to my academic pursuits.”

The 47-year-old Jerry says his early school days at an institution he describes as vibrant were crucial to establishing a foundation on which to build his dream of being a successful media practitioner.

“Thaba Nchu, Free State, holds a special place in my heart as my cherished birthplace and the nurturing ground of my upbringing,” he adds.

When opportunity calls, it's best to pick up and act accordingly.

Beyond high school, he went on to further his expertise and acquire the skills that would directly aid him in carving out a space for himself in media.

Jerry explains that his journey in the media industry began early on, starting at Mmabana Cultural Centre, “where I honed my skills in Fine Art, excelling in competitions”.

Transitioning to Johannesburg, he cultivated deep connections, including cherished friendships with the late Lebo Mathosa and collaborations with Theo Nhlengethwa.

“Through shared experiences and learnings, I embraced roles in Road Management, supporting esteemed artists like KB Motsilanyane and Bonang Matheba.”

With a wealth of experience spanning over two decades, Jerry finds it remarkable to reflect on the company's founding 14 years ago, highlighting the enduring legacy he and his team have built.

“Our collaborations have been a source of immense joy and pride, encompassing esteemed brands like Regenesis Business College, FNB, SEDA, Standard Bank, ICASA, Roth Media, Magna Carta, BNG & Bonang Matheba Foundation, and many more.”

He says working with exceptional individuals such as Pabi Moloi, Aldrin Sampear, Mpho Sebeng, Didi Mokobane, Kwenzo Ncobo, Matt Elle, and Jay Music has been an absolute privilege.

“Within the dynamic media field, I thrive in various roles, particularly in Art Direction and Business Development. The satisfaction of overseeing successful outcomes and breathing life into creative visions is truly exhilarating. Entrusting me with directing shoots is an opportunity to witness magic in motion.”

His connection to his work runs deeper than profit margins or a yearning to bolster his bottom line.

“Partnering with brands to catalyse positive change in the industry is not just a career but a profound calling that brings me immense fulfilment.

“Engaging with diverse personalities and contributing to meaningful transformations is a gratifying pursuit that fuels my passion.”

The exuberant media expert loves everything about the media space.

“Yet, when it comes to my work, I simply cannot tolerate any unprofessional behaviour. It goes against everything I stand for, but somehow, I always find a way to overcome it all.”

Over the years he has tackled numerous intricate projects, and some have truly tested his limits, he admits.

“Dealing with clients who are indecisive and constantly altering agreements presents a real challenge. Also, taking on tasks that come with specific responsibilities, only to have the demands surpass all expectations, can be quite the uphill battle.”
