American singer-songwriter Kelis and her rapper ex-husband Nas were one of the golden couples in the hip-hop community, but that all changed when their four-year marriage ended in 2009. Kelis was seven months pregnant at the time with their son, Knight.
Now, in an interview with Hollywood Unlocked, Kelis has finally come out with the full details of why she left Nas. She said seeing pictures of Rihanna’s bruised faced as a result of Chris Brown’s abuse motivated her to walk out of her own abusive marriage.
“When the Rihanna and Chris Brown pictures came out I thought about coming out because I also had bruises all over my body. But I didn’t say anything because I’m private. But seeing her the way she looked and then looking at myself . . . I felt embarrassed,” the 38-year-old mother-of-two said.
“I was pregnant and it was a mess and I felt like I wasn’t going to bring a child into this.”
She spoke of the times in her marriage where the lows were really low – when she and Nas would go out drinking and Nas wouldn’t know when to stop. As a result, Kelis says the rapper’s memory of that time was distorted.
“His memory is definitely faulty. I’ve waited nine years to say anything. I’ve never talked about this man. The amount of airing out that I could do and don’t do is what our kids will find out.”
Despite all of this Kelis says she has moved on and is happy. “I’m living my life. I’m cooking. I’m raising my kids and I’m very private.”
