Cape Town - Comedienne Tumi Morake has never been one to shy away from voicing her opinion, often regarded as controversial by many, so her latest comment is no different.

In a recent interview on Trending SA, the 36-year-old revealed she was angry at herself for not being at Jacaranda FM during Mam’ Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s passing.

Speaking to the Trending SA hosts about the social media backlash she constantly gets, Tumi explained how an opinionated woman is often seen as “dangerous”.

“Winnie Mandela’s death brought that back to me, when I went: ‘When you’re a black woman with a voice, you are a dangerous thing’,” she explained.

“We are always told to speak within the lines. I must tell you, the passing of Mam’ Winnie broke me in ways I never thought I could be broken. I got angry at myself for leaving Jacaranda. I was like, ‘This is the time I should have been there for her passing because this thing is going to be covered in news then passed over, but this is a big historical thing that has happened’.”

The #WTFTumi host further explained she could have defended Mam’ Winnie’s legacy according to what her father would tell her when she was younger.

“My father used to talk about that woman with such pride. I even thought there was something wrong with my dad because the rest of the world made me fear her to a degree, but the stories my father told me were not that,” she added.

Earlier this year Tumi shocked fans when she resigned from Jacaranda FM where she was co-hosting the breakfast show alongside Martin Bester.

It was reported the comedienne had left the show for her peace of mind and to focus on other things.

“This was not an easy decision for me at all. The timing was just not right for this relationship – it is like leaving a lover you are still in love with. I really hope fate will bring us together again one day," Tumi reportedly said.
