Gospel star Hlengiwe Mhlaba has every reason to be over the moon as she joins the likes of Rebecca Malope and Winnie Mashaba who have honorary doctorates.

The singer has been mum about the news on her social media platforms but those close to her have expressed their excitement for her achievement.

The Crown Gospel Music Awards announced on the news on their social media and issued a statement.

“On the 15th February 2020, in Johannesburg at Emmanuel University of Theology , Ms Hlengiwe Mhlaba was awarded with Honorary Doctorate in Theology,” they posted on their Facebook page.

The awards organisers went on to express their congratulations and what this actually means.

“As the World Gospel Powerhouse we strongly encourage our gospel artists to consistently develop their craft so they can position themselves for a recognition of this nature. We are truly ascetic for such an honour awarded to an artist that has shown resilience and tanecity over the years in the Gospel industry. Sithi: Shine sis' Hlengiwe may you continue to reach even greater height in your music career,” read the statement.

In December last year, gospel star Winnie Mashaba was also awarded an Honorary Doctrate by the Trinity International Bible University (TIBU) for her work in music.

In sharing the news, this is some of what she had to say.

“I truly never thought that being disciplined and humbled to the talent would one day give me an Honorary Doctorate and also make me dine with Kings and highly respected leaders,” she shared on social media.

Another powerhouse in the gospel industry has been recognised for her contribution in the genre is Sis Ribs. Dr Rebecca Malope received an honorary doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of California for her contribution to the music industry.

Despite not understanding what it meant initially, Sis Ribs has come to fully embrace it.
