It is no secret that South Africans love a good time. The 21 days of lockdown isn’t going to go down well with many, especially partygoers who love dancing and listening to their favourite DJs.

Weekends for many are for shisanyama, the club or honouring social gatherings with lit line-ups. The idea of an online party has come to the rescue as your favourite DJs will now play live on Channel O (DStv Channel 320) every Fridays and Saturdays from today to the 11 April.

The concept all started when Shimza started the #OnlineQuarantineParty last week much to the relief of those at home, bagging over 134 000 streams via Twitter in just six hours and eventually reached almost more than a million people across different platforms.

“I knew it would have impact but not this much,” Shimza says. The next day, he was already locked in a meeting with Channel O. The DJ says COVID-19 has made him think differently about his DJing career.

“It has made me think out of the box. Perhaps this will also make others think about what they can do and how they can make money from home,” Shimza says.

The 35-year-old DJ opened his own restaurant in October 2019, Hang Awt in Tembisa, but he has had to shutdown since the COVID-19 outbreak. “What saddens me is all the employees who made money from tips and commission. Now they have no income,” Shimza explains.

DJ PH has come on board as a co-host the show, he tells Move! that this unusual free time has not been at all bad for him.

“It has been a blessing in disguise. I have been focusing a lot on myself. Mentally, giving an opportunity for one to reflect and restart,” DJ PH says.

Apart from the #LockdownHouseParty powered by Hunter’s Cider, he is back to reading books again, something impossible to do during his busy schedule.

Tonight’s line-up will include DJ Maphorisa, Black Motion, DJ Zinhle and Darque.
