WHAT IT’S ABOUT:
Joanna and Alistair are a young couple forced to face unthinkable circumstances under the white light of public scrutiny, changing their lives and their relationship forever. They travel from Scotland to Australia with their baby son Noah, to fight for custody of Alistair's 14-year-old daughter Chloe, from his previous marriage. Exhausted and emotional from the journey the couple finally arrive in Australia, where unforeseen events change their lives forever.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
A child being kidnapped is one of the most harrowing things that could happen to any parent which makes a heart-breakingly captivating premise for a TV show.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Helen FitzGerald the four part mini-series delivers delicious twists at every turn that will keep you glued to your screen.
Just when you think you know what happened to poor Noah, there’s another plot twist that you didn’t see coming.
What adds to the suspense is the way the story is told – it weaves between the present and the past as the mystery unfolds. I must admit that the pacing does lag a bit however, the build up to climatic events are definitely worth the wait.
Jenna Coleman who plays young mom Joanna is without a doubt the star of the show for me. She is so incredibly vulnerable in her portrayal that you can literally feel her anguish.
Ewan Leslie who plays dad Alistair gives a nuanced performance of his characters light and dark attributes – he is controlling, manipulative and narcissistic. He was a very hard character to sympathise with – especially next to the fragile Joanne.
While the series is a work of fiction it does explore very real themes that people face like mental health, post-natal depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and emotional abuse.
A great storyline, a stellar cast with the right amount of suspense and thrill The Cry is a psychological thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
