5 celebs who have had to master shooting for movie and TV roles

It’s that time of the week again. The time to get your weekly dose of female empowerment meets adrenaline as a new episode of Not A Diva reaches your TV screens. SA’s hot new show is brought to you by the female-focused insurance company 1st for Women who offer insurance specifically designed for women.

Handling a weapon is no joke, especially a weapon as contested as a gun. There are several shooting ranges and training schools the world over that look at training individuals in the delicate task of handling a firearm.

This is exactly what we’ll be seeing The River star, Galaletsang Koffman, face as she is taken to a shooting range in the upcoming episode of 1st for Women's Not A Diva. You can catch all the nail-biting action on Mzansi Magic channel 161 on Thursday, May 23 at 21:30.

Training to use a gun is no joke. In fact, Matt Clanton, the founder of Act Tactical for Film, said that actors are often taught as though they’re using real weapons. And according to Robert Evans, film sets tend to use real firearms (albeit stocked with blanks) to capture the full effect on screen.

Some of your favourite characters and actors who have had to learn the delicate task of handling firearms for a role are:

Angelina Jolie

Having played the role of tough, bullet-biting and butt-kicking shero in many of her acting gigs, the Tomb Raider and Salt icon knows her way around a gun and not just on screen. While the tactical training is needed to prepare for a role, the actress has admitted that she keeps a gun at home for defense purposes to protect her brood.

The Walking Dead cast

In a world plagued by zombies, the need for quick, effective and distant defense is vital to survival. Therefore, the use of guns are common throughout the series and its spin-off Fear the Walking Dead. The cast had gone through rigorous tactical training to ensure they know how to handle a gun in these apocalyptic situations. So, you can see some of your favourite zombie-thrashing women swiftly get their kills on the show with ease.

Michelle Rodriguez

Our badass action heroine has also done her fair share of tactical training when it came to portraying her character, Letty Ortiz, in Fate of the Furious.

Scarlett Johansson

Between protecting the planet alongside The Avengers as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, and being a cyborg assassin in Ghost in the Shell, Johansson has had to learn her way around handling a firearm. Prior to her action roles, Johansson admits she had never done tactical training before, which is hard to believe with her stellar performance in both franchises.

Zoe Saldana

Protecting the world and galaxy is a tough job, one that Saldana is accustomed to in her role as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. Not only is she part of a vital team maintaining the balance of the universe, but she has also portrayed a tough and strong female character as an assassin seeking vengeance for the death of her parents in Colombiana. Both of these major roles required tactical skills that Saldana pulls off with ease.
