On Friday the nominations for the 14th annual South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas) were announced.

Leading this year’s nominations is the popular telenovela The River, which raked in 15 nominations across numerous categories.

Close on its heels was the soapie Isibaya, the prison drama Lockdown S4 and the feature film Fiela se Kind who all clinched 11 nominations each, while the drama series The Republic rounded things off with 10 nominations.

One category noticeably missing from the list is the TV comedy awards.

Channel24 contacted the National Film and Video Foundation, to find out why there was no comedy category this year.

Makhosazana Khanyile, CEO of the National Film and Video Foundation said: "The TV comedy nominees category was not announced at the SAFTAs 14 Nominees announcement launch due to the number of applications received.

"The category received less than three entries and at the judge's discretion, the judging process was unable to proceed to the judging phase which resulted in there being no nominees for the comedy category."

The NFVF joined forces with 205 industry experts from across the country to form a judging committee that spent over two months deliberating and rounding off the final nominees of the 70 categories.

Tali's Wedding Diary cleaned up the comedy category in 2019.
