Showmax's second original show on the way

Cape Town – For their second original production Showmax is tapping into the murder mystery genre.

The Girl from St. Agnes is the streaming service’s first original scripted drama which will be done in collaboration with Quizzical Pictures (iNumber number).

"Our first Showmax Original, Tali’s Wedding Diary, broke internal viewing records and gave us clear proof that people are hungry for local stories told well," says Candice Fangueiro, Head of Content for Multichoice’s Connected Video unit which houses both Showmax and DStv Now.

"This second original production is a complete change in direction – from light-hearted comedy to something that tackles some of the most difficult themes in today’s society. The thread holding these two productions together, and in fact holds all of the other Showmax Originals currently in the pipeline together, is our aim to be the home for brave, quirky and at times edgy local stories that you won’t find anywhere else."

According to Variety the series centres on a mysterious death at an elite boarding school which set off a search for answers. In the search for the truth secrets from the past come to the surface.

Producer Harriet Gavshon says that it is a universal story and that it will resonate with a global audience.

Speaking about the themes explored Gavshon says that “it deals with misogyny, teenage sexuality and identity.”

Filming for the 8 episode series began on 1 October.

It is being filmed in the town of Ixopo in the Midlands as well as various locations in Johannesburg.

The Girl from St Agnes is scheduled for a January 2019 release on Showmax.
