Cape Town - When you imagine a couple who goes the distance, it’s often the ones who have lots in common, look good together and speak a common language when it comes to life and love.

Romantic comedies are often filled with the idea of the perfect pairs who joyfully make their way towards a happy ending.

But SA soapies are filled with twosomes who are often at odds. We take a look at TV couples who’ve stood the test of time.

MANGCOBO, NKUNZI AND MAMLAMBO

South Africa’s most-watched daily TV show, Uzalo, on SABC1 increased viewership last year when MaMlambo, played by Gugu Gumede, betrayed her friend MaNgcobo, played by Dawn Thandeka King, by dating her husband – Nkunzi, portrayed by Masoja Msiza.

The act was out of character for the God-fearing MaMlambo, which is why viewers couldn’t wait for the love story to unfold. In the end, Nkunzi took MaMlambo as his second wife and an angry MaNgcobo set out the rules of this new engagement.

The union between MaMlambo and Nkunzi strained the friendship between the ladies for a bit until they adjusted and realised they needed to work together.

RACHEL AND MAROTHI

Rachel, played by Lesego Marakalla, is clearly not following in the footsteps of her lucky-in-love parents on SABC1’s Skeem Saam. This young woman is about to marry a much older man – dishonest businessman – Marothi, played by Macks Papo.

As any fan will tell you, he always has something up his sleeve and his wife to-be is always the last to find out. Will it end in heartache? Nobody knows if things will work out for this pair, but we expect lots more drama.

GRACIOUS MABUZA AND SCHUMACHER

Who would have thought The Great One Mabuza (TGOM) on Mzansi Magic’s The Queen would be dating a general worker? Gracious, played by Rami Chuene, is a successful businesswoman who deals in drugs and she’s often associated with high-end businessmen.

Her relationship with Schumacher, played by Vuyo Ngcukana, started casually with steamy sex at a wedding. Not long after their affair begun, Schumacher moved into the Mabuza household and started engaging in family affairs. It’s also hard to forget that just last year Schumacher had been dating a gay man, Kgosi, who then left the country.

Now Schumacher has quit his truck-driving job and swapped it for a business venture in logistics. He’s under the impression the business is a success, but his lover has been secretly paying her business partners to act like they are interested. Will the relationship built on lies work out? Watch and see.
