Jody Abrahams: From childhood theatre actor to Safta nominee

Johannesburg - Lead actor in SABC3’s popular drama Hard Copy, Jody Abrahams portrays seasoned journalist Benny Jacobs. He’s up for Best Actor in a TV Drama, with Masemola and Mtshali at the Saftas.

Abrahams has been described by his co-stars as phenomenal when he steps into the shoes of Jacobs. “We’ve had scenes where he’s been so intense that I become an audience member and forget to act because he’s so good,” his on-screen wife, Nicola Hanekom, has previously said.

Abrahams has no formal training, but was exposed to theatre as a child in Cape Town. His first role was at the age of seven, with a line in a production of The Ha’penny Opera.

Abrahams got to work with and learn from theatre veterans David Kramer and Taliep Petersen when he starred in their celebrated production called District Six – The Musical as an 11-year-old playing the role of Broertjie.

He played Broertjie for almost two years and went on tour to Johannesburg and Edinburgh, Scotland. While it’s his TV and film roles, including those in Scandal!, Backstage, Interrogation Room, 7de Laan and Fishy Fêshuns, that have made him a household name, Abrahams is a must-watch on the theatre stage, where he comes to life even more.
