From vampire fangs to suits and books - Charles Michael Davis lets us in on his 'Younger' role

CHANNEL24 SPECIAL FEATURE

Channel24's Leandra Engelbrecht interviewed American actor Charles Michael Davis about his role in the hit TV show Younger.

Cape Town – Charles Michael Davis has swapped the vampire fangs for a suit and a pen.

The actor best known for his role as the bloodthirsty Marcel Gerard in The Originals plays book editor Zane Anders in TV Land's longest-running series Younger available on Showmax.

In July the show was renewed for a seventh season. According to Variety it ranks as the top cable comedy among women.

The comedy-drama centres on Liza Miller (Sutton Foster) a 40-year-old divorcee who lies about her age to get a job at a publishing company, Empirical Press. There she befriends co-worker Kelsey Peters (Hilary Duff).

Spoiler alert! As more and more characters discover Liza's real age drama unfolds in her personal and professional life.

Charles' character Zane first appeared in a recurring role on the show in season 4. As the hot new editor of a rival publishing company he initially competes with Kelsey for clients but things take a turn when they become romantically involved.

In season five the 34-year-old was upped to series regular and became Kelsey's colleague at Empirical Press.

ON JOINING THE CAST

"It wasn't originally on my radar because I was working a lot in Atlanta on The Originals, so I wasn't watching much TV or anything like that. So, I didn't know the landscape of the show. I was pretty surprised, though when I got into it. I moved to New York, and I got the audition for Younger, I did my research and learnt about Sutton and how talented she is and the rest of the cast, and I thought it was a nice cast and show to be on."

DOES HE HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON WITH ZANE?

"He wears a lot of suits and is very well put together; I don't. As far as personality and character I think Zane has aspects of me. We're quite similar. There is nothing too crazy about Zane he's not a murdering vampire he's a book editor there's nothing too crazy about him."

ON HIS CHARACTER'S GROWTH

Charles laughs, sheepishly at this question before he answers.

"I don't know if he has [grown]. I can tell you his relationship with Kelsey has grown. I guess you will see a little more growth at the end of the season."

SPEAKING ABOUT HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH KELSEY…

"I can't tell you if they will have a happily ever after. Why would you ask me that? Maybe there will be happy moments. That's the great thing about them; they have great chemistry."

HOW DID HE AND HILARY GET THAT ONSCREEN CHEMISTRY?

"They put me through a hazing period; I had to get them coffee… I'm just joking," he adds.

"Hilary is very down to earth and fun, and competitive, and I enjoyed working with her from the start. We just started talking, and she was easy to chat with and pretty open, and that helps off-screen to form the relationship on screen."

TALKING ABOUT BOOKS

According to Parade, Charles enjoys reading non-fiction books. Seeing that he plays a book editor, there is one book he wishes he published in real life.

"Spider-Man! I wish I created Spider-Man. You were expecting something different, right?"

WHERE WOULD HE LIKE TO SEE ZANE GO IN SEASON 7?

"I would like to see more people reading books and that the company is doing well. I would also like to see the character's progression; take some risks, move forward in life and have more adventure."
