Cape Town - Internet TV delivers your weekend laughs in spades this weekend, with some off-the-wall local films you’ve probably never seen, a whole collection of adults-only animation, stop-motion and live-action NSFW series, and offbeat Hollywood gems.
1. Adult Swim Collection (Showmax)
An extensive catalogue of Adult Swim’s weirdly wonderful, eclectic, surprising, quirky and surreal content. This includes multi-award-winning animated series Samurai Jack, Robot Chicken, and Rick and Morty, along with fan favourites Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Jellies plus live-action comedies Black Jesus and Eagleheart.
2. Stone Cold Jane Austen (Showmax)
Get ready for the greatest rock story you've never heard in this hilarious mockumentary, starring Jon Savage and Rob van Vuuren. They think they are the country's hardest-working, coolest, most hardcore and most legendary Afrikaans music act. Long story short? They’re not even close. But their utter lack of self-awareness and their delightful delusion are a lot of fun to watch.
3. Vuil Wasgoed (Showmax)
This very funny movie was based on an award-winning Silwerskerm short, and it’s like an Afrikaans Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Wim and Kevin are two slackers who make money washing rich people's clothes, which they also use to party in! Then they discover a severed finger in one pocket and land in serious hot water in this hilarious comedy.
4. Warm Bodies (Showmax)
Everyone thinks zombies are braindead. But then a young teen zombie saves a living girl from an attack... and they start the most unlikely of relationships. Described as a “paranormal romantic zombie comedy”, this is not your typical undead film, and instead offers a quirky new take on a classic love story.
5. Addicted to Fresno (Showmax)
A raunchy comedy about co-dependent sisters who work in a hotel in Fresno. When a hotel guest is killed accidentally, Shannon and Martha try desperately to cover up the crime. Judy Greer (Arrested Development) plays Shannon and Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black) stars as Martha in this movie that was made for a game of “spot the indie-comedy darling”, with Aubrey Plaza, Fred Armisen and Molly Shannon among the all-star cast.
6. Bunny Chow (Showmax)
In this fun SA movie, three young men slip out of the city to a big rock festival where they hope to dazzle crowds and engage in unparalleled decadence away from their realities. Starring Kagiso Lediga, David Kibuuka and Joey Rasdien.
7. Girl Flu (DStv Now)
This bittersweet indie film is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. (It’s about periods, for one thing.) When 12-year-old Bird hits puberty, both she and her flighty stoner of a mother have to learn what it means to grow up. The movie expires from DStv Now on Sunday, 18 November, so this is your last chance to see it.
8. The Fundamentals of Caring (Netflix)
A dark comedy about Ben (Paul Rudd), a retired writer who is the only person bitter and twisted enough to cope as a caregiver to foul-mouthed 18-year-old Trevor, who has muscular dystrophy. Ben and Trevor go on a roadtrip to find America’s oddest attractions (world’s biggest bovine; world’s deepest pit), as they try to come to terms with their own tragedies along the way.
9. Paul (Amazon Prime)
From Simon Pegg and Nick Frost comes this wacky movie about a pot-smoking, sarcastic alien called Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen), who escapes from the top-secret government facility he’s been kept in and jumps into the first vehicle he sees - a rented RV that happens to contain Graeme (Pegg) and Clive (Frost), two British sci-fi nerds who decide to help Paul get home. If you’re looking for a dose of bad-taste humour shot through with sci-fi in-jokes, this is your movie.
