8 new shows to binge-watch this weekend

Cape Town - Here they are - eight new shows worth your time and data, all premiering in time for the first weekend of the eighth month of 2019. You’re welcome!

1. Project Blue Book S1 (Showmax)

Project Blue Book is a series all about searching for aliens and UFOs - and it’s actually based on true events. In the 1950s and 60s, UFO fever gripped the USA, leading the US Air Force to carry out a series of studies (under the code name Project Blue Book) to ascertain whether there truly were alien forces behind a series of strange events and lights in the sky. Starring Aidan Gillen of Game of Thrones fame as the real-life Dr J Allen Hynek, the astronomer tasked with investigating the possibility of alien life forms.

2. Siren S2, new episodes (Showmax)

Recently renewed for season 3, the mermaid horror/fantasy series has garnered critical interest lately because of its polyamory storyline. Ryn, the siren who finds herself ashore in season 1, and who has vengeance in her cold, cold heart, finds herself attracted to Ben, a marine biologist, who happens to be in a relationship with fellow marine biologist Maddie. But that’s no problem - the only thing juicier than a throuple is a throuple in which one of the lovers is a mermaid. As TVGuide says, "TV’s most interesting polyamorous relationship… Love is love is love, even when one part of your throuple is technically part fish."

3. Sweet Bitter S1 (Showmax)

Moving to New York is a dream shared by millions of people around the world. It’s The Big Apple – the hub of everything cosmopolitan and trendy and chic and it’s the city that doesn’t sleep... Except in Sweet Bitter it’s not exactly a dream come true for Tess (Ella Purnell), who lands a waitressing job at a famous restaurant, only to see her life get turned completely upside down. Gone are her morals and clean, sober living habits, replaced with sex, drugs, booze and all the debauchery the city has to offer. Sweet… she’s followed her dream to NYC. Bitter… it’s not all she dreamed it would be.

4. The Good Fight S3 (DStv Now)

Over the first two seasons of this spin-off of The Good Wife, which follows Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockheart as she starts a new firm in Chicago, the show pushed its boundaries, with an increasing anti-Trump sentiment running throughout the second. Now in Season 3, with the same political subject matter in which the President is the villain, the show’s format has been expanded as well. Characters breaking the fourth wall, animated inserts, and random musical interludes are employed to wacky effect - look out for the NDA segment in season 3, episode 1, which is now streaming on DStv Now. S1-2 are on Showmax if you need to catch up.

5. Temptation Island S1 (DStv Now)

Four couples embark on a journey to find out if they’re meant to be together forever - by being thrown into a situation where a bunch of hot single people (who are looking for love) try to get them to cheat on their other half. It may be your nightmare, but it’s impossible not to get hooked on this addictive reality series. If it piques your interest in sexy-young-people-gone-bad shows, check out Love Island S1-3 on Showmax.

6. Derry Girls S2 (Netflix)

The hilarious gang of 16-year-olds (four girls and their male tagalong) are back as they navigate Catholic school, English oppression and life in a small town in Northern Ireland in the late 1990s. The soundtrack is as nostalgic as ever from the very first episode of season 2, with the perfect intersection of singalong 90s pop (think: Boyzone and Ace of Base) and iconic Irish bands like The Corrs and The Cranberries.

7. Dear White People Volume 3 (Netflix)

After the crazy plot twist at the end of season 2, the students of Winchester are ready to embrace new creative challenges and romantic possibilities. That is, until a charismatic professor shakes up life on campus. (Spoiler: look out for Breaking Bad’s best baddie Gus Fring!) This season has been highly anticipated - be prepared to be floored by further twists and turns.

8. This Is Football S1 (Amazon Prime)

While you wait for the Community Shield game between Man City and Liverpool on Sunday, stream this brand-new Amazon Original series about the magic of the sport. This Is Football unpacks the unique phenomenon that grips and unifies billions of people from every corner of the globe. Each story unfolds through the experience of men and women of different races, cultures and creeds, all of them united in their passion for football.
