10 exciting new series to look forward to on DStv

Cape Town – DStv has promised to bring viewers supersized entertainment this year. 

In recent times series have garnered bigger audiences than Hollywood blockbusters and even A-listers are flocking to the small screen.

At their annual media Showcase Multichoice unveiled their impressive series line-up for the year. 

Action, comedy, drama and time travelling periodicals there's something for everyone to see. 

Here are 10 series to look forward to:

1. Chicago Justice

The Chicago franchise by Dick Wolf expands into the city's State's Attorney's office. The series will focus on the dedicated team of prosecutors and investigators who navigate heated city politics and controversy head-on, while fearlessly pursuing justice. It stars Chicago PD alum Jon Seda, Carl Weathers, Philip Winchester, Joelle Carter and Monica Barbaro.

The series will air from Tuesday, 9 May at 21:30 on M-Net (DStv 101).

2. Trial and Error

John Lithgow stars in the NBC mockumentary. It is a spoof of crime documentaries about the arrest and trial of a beloved poetry professor from a small town in South Carolina, who is accused of brutally murdering his wife, and the young Northeastern lawyer hired to defend him.

Other cast members include: Nick D'Agosto, Sherri Shepherd, Jayma Mays, Steven Boyer and Krysta Rodriguez.

The series will air on M-Net from Monday, 10 April at 18:00 on M-Net (DStv 101).

3. Twin Peaks: The Return

This is one of the most anticipated series of the year. It is a continuation of the popular 90s series. The plot of the series has remained tightly under wraps. 

The entire original cast returns with newcomers Eddie Vedder, Trent Reznor, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried.

4. Training Day

Based on the blockbuster starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke the series takes place 15 years after the events of the movie.

It centres on a young, idealistic police officer Kyle Craig (Justin Cornwell) as he goes undercover in the elite Special Investigations Section of the Los Angeles Police Department to spy on morally ambiguous Detective Frank Rourke (Bill Paxton).

The series will air from Thursday 18 May at 21:30 on M-Net (DStv 101).

5. Powerless

This action comedy is the first sitcom series set within the world of the DC Universe. It takes place in the DC Universe and follows the adventures of Emily Locke (Vanessa Hudgens) as Director of Research & Development at Wayne Security, a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises based in Charm City, that specialises in products for ordinary humans who are poised to be victims of the battles between superheroes and supervillains.

6. Timeless

The sci-fi time travelling drama follows the adventures of a history professor, a scientist and a solider as they travel through time to stop a former NSA agent from rewriting history. 

The series stars: Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Sakina Jaffrey and Goran Višnjic.

7. Genius

National Geographic presents their first-ever scripted series based on the Walter Isaacson book Einstein: His Life and Universe.

The 10 part series explores Einstein’s story beyond the laboratory to explore his struggles to be a good husband and father, and a man of principle.

The series will air from Sunday, 23 April at 20:05 on National Geographic (DStv 181).

8. The Collection

A gripping family drama and entrepreneurial fable, set in a post-war Paris fashion house. It exposes the grit behind the glamour of a rising business, spearheaded by two clashing brothers.

It stars Richard Coyle, Tom Riley, Mamie Gummer, Frances de la Tour and Jenna Thiam.

The series will air on BBC First in April. 

9. Sara se Gehiem

This local drama stars June van Merch, Lee-Ann van Rooi, Quanita Adams and Dawid Minnaar.

Set in Cape Town with two storylines going hand in hand – one about a family in Durbanville and the other about a family in Athlone. The lives of these two families might look as if they are worlds apart, but one lie connects them; a lie that has been kept secret for 35 years.

10. INumber Number

Mzansi Magic adds a new exciting drama to their slate.

INumber Number, inspired by the successful feature film of the same name, is about a cop that infiltrates a crime family to bring his estranged father to justice – only to find the father he has always wanted to have.
