South African comedian Nina Hastie is one celebrity who doesn’t shy away from sharing her truth.

The 36-year-old who’s been sober for six years often shares her reality to help people who might be going through the same situation as her.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, anxiety levels are bound to spike up and the comedian wants to alleviate that weight by sharing live Instagram sessions with her therapist, Hanan Bushkin, as they candidly answer questions on anxiety.

In their recent session Nina gets emotional speaking about the misconceptions people have about anxiety.

“I tried to explain it to my family because it’s also very triggering because it’s so difficult to be around people who are anxious the whole time and when that happens, I get more triggered,” she says.

“It upsets my mom when I get anxious and it upsets my family, and my dad often shouts like: ‘Snap out of it!’”

The comedian went on to shed light on the topic by recalling an explanation she shared with her sister.

“I tried explaining it to my sister, [anxiety] feels like being a kid, sh***ing your pants and everyone's watching. It’s so embarrassing,” Nina recalled.

“It’s like wetting the bed and everyone is watching and screaming at you and for days after that, I feel so embarrassed and ashamed that I had a freak out and I revert into this other person and I can’t be my effective self . . . It’s not a mind over matter thing.”

Nina has also been sharing daily updates on how she’s finding the experience of being in lockdown.
