In a blow for Top Gun fans, the release date for the movie’s highly anticipated sequel has now been set back to Christmas time.
Top Gun: Maverick was scheduled for release on 24 June in the US, but it’s now been shifted to 23 December 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic which has seen cinemas being forced to shut globally.
It’s star, Tom Cruise, shared the news on his social media platforms yesterday, saying he knows how much this will disappoint fans.
“I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone,” the 57-year-old tweeted yesterday.
The film, a sequel to 1986’s smash hit Top Gun, sees Cruise reprising his role as gung ho jet pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. It also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Val Kilmer, who returns as Iceman.
Miles Teller plays Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. He must teach the young pilot to follow in his father’s footsteps.
The film – for which the trailer was released last December – joins a growing list of movies rescheduling their release dates to later in the year, when hopefully the current health crisis is over.
