Cape Town – Progressive Canadian metal act Intervals is heading to South Africa this month to headline the Krank’d Up 2017 music festival.
Fronted and founded by Canadian guitar hero Aaron Marshall, the band’s second full length album, The Shape of Colour found its way onto almost every "Best albums of the year" list in 2015, catapulting Intervals into the stratosphere as one of the world’s most exciting instrumental metal bands around today.
Aaron Marshall and his supremely talented band have experience in buckets, having toured with the likes of Between The Buried and Me, Misery Signals, Protest The Hero, TesseracT, Animals As Leaders, Periphery and The Contortionist to name a few.
We had a chat with Aaron ahead of his visit to South Africa.

How are you and where are you at the moment?
I'm doing great! I'm currently at home in Toronto, Canada.
Are you looking forward to visiting South Africa and will this be your first time here?
I can't wait! This will be my first time there, yes.
Will it be a short trip to SA, or will you have time to do some sightseeing?
I wish I had some more time to stay and explore a bit. Everyone keeps telling me I need to get to Cape Town. Things are really busy right now so I won't be able to stay for too long after the festival.
You’re currently working on a new album which is set to drop soon. Does the new album differ a lot from The Shape of Colour?
I am indeed! I think it does to an extent, but also relatable. While this one explores some new territory, I also feel like it might be the most "balanced" Intervals record to date.
Can you describe the new album sound in one sentence?
High energy, thought provoking, intrinsically nostalgic.
Can you share a crazy tour story with us? (pretty please?!)
Last summer in Italy, on tour with Animals As Leaders, I cut the index finger on my left hand pretty bad only a few hours before that night's show. I had to go the hospital and get it glued up so I could play (which wasn't recommended). It was painfully annoying and a hell of a challenge, but I didn't miss a show, let alone a note, and had to play with a bandage on (arguably) the most important finger on my fretting hand for about 9 days. It was such a stupid little thing to happen to in the midst of a tour but I managed to not let anyone (or myself) down and made it through.
What’s the one thing no one knows about you?
There's probably a bunch of things but since I know there's a bit of a scene for it in SA, I'll go with my interest in battle rap. I've been into it for a few years and really appreciate the tactile nature of it and the penmanship.
What’s the one thing you never tour without?
A clothing steamer, haha. It’s such a tour hack! I hate pulling clothes out of my luggage that are wrinkly and looking like you actually live on the road. It’s an extra step but very worth it, in my opinion, haha!
What can SA fans expect from your show?
You guys can expect a fun, high energy performance with a well-rounded set consisting of songs from The Shape of Colour, In Time, and a few new ones!
Do you have a message for your SA fans?
I'm super thankful for the opportunity to come play for you guys and I can't wait to experience the sites and culture. I'll be seeing you soon!
