We asked K-$ 5 quick questions before the Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music Africa event kicks off

Cape Town - Boiler Room and Ballantine’s earlier this month announced the launch of True Music Africa, a four-city tour that will take in exciting underground music scenes from countries as diverse as South Africa and Kenya.

The tour kicks off in Cape Town on 23 November with a line-up featuring the most pivotal hip hop artists involved in the local music scene before moving on to Cameroon, Nairobi and finally Jozi.

The Cape Town show features some of the country’s most well-respected original self-starters, including K-$, Dope Saint Jude, Youngsta CPT, Aux Womdantso and DJ Lyle.

To get everyone in the mood for the event Channel24 asked K-$ a few quick questions.

Who is K-$?

K-$ is a DJ and internet sensation hailing from Cape Town's Southern Suburbs. Having developed a keen appreciation for music when he was nothing but a little mischief maker, he was moved to teach himself to play various instruments, expanding on his understanding of the art form.

Coming up under a father who was also a DJ, this selecta has a deep love for timeless classics and is naturally drawn to the rhythms emerging from RnB, funk, disco & soul's golden years. The soundtrack of yesteryear's playboys, mac daddies & supaluvas has influenced not just his sound, but persona and aesthetic too.

Quick questions

1. My friend has never heard your music/sets before and is finally giving you a chance: What should I play first?

My mix for i-D Magazine is a great party starter. Surefire way to get everyone dancing. Trust!

2. What Sneakers are you wearing right now?

I’m wearing the Nike Vandal High Supreme ‘Doc Brown’. They were first seen in the first Back to the Future, worn by the character Doc Brown. This is an iconic movie, and I love this silhouette, so when they came out last month I had to get ‘em.

3. We're driving to a party and I hand you the aux chord, what song is playing?

Just a touch of love - Slave

4. For your next performance, you can collab with any artist, alive or dead: Who's the feature?

James Brown. One time.

5. Which local artist is the most slept on?

Broken Transient. Man’s beeeeen had beats.
