Mercury Live - one of the longest running venues in the South African entertainment industry – has shut its doors.
In a statement, posted on their Facebook on Thursday morning the legendary venue said that the current global climate and South Africa's new ordinances around social distancing – due to the coronavirus – makes its hard to see a future.
The post reads in part: "It is with an extremely heavy heart that we bring this news. With the current global and national situation going on, it has become increasingly worrisome for venues like us. With gatherings less than 100 people it is going to be difficult to keep this baby going. So, we have decided to that, unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye..."
In case you don't know, as referenced above according to an address by president Ramaphosa no gatherings with more than 100 people are allowed. This is keeping with curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
But not all hope is lost, the statement also says that we will see a new Mercury Live at an undetermined date in the future, "after the dust settles".
It is with an extremely heavy heart that we bring this news. With the current global and national situation going on, it has become increasingly worrisome for venues like us. With gatherings less than 100 people it is going to be difficult to keep this baby going.
So, we have decided to that, unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye...
Thank you to all of you, the bands and patrons, who have played a role in the last few years of Mercury. We have seen some of the greatest acts come onto our stage and it has been an honour and a privilege to host these epic shows for all of you, and to be a part of the South African music industry.
To all previous owners and managers and all the staff that have come and gone - We salute you! Mercury will always have a special place in many hearts and we hope to keep playing our role in the South African music industry in the future.
We love you and once again, thank you for one wild ride. This is not the end of Mercury, we will be relocating when the dust has settled.
