Cape Town - Embattled singer R. Kelly’s past is catching up to him.
It was recently uncovered that he allegedly bribed an official to officiate his marriage to late R&B singer Aaliyah in 1994, according to E! News.
The controversy sparked when it was highlighted that the late singer was only 15 years old when Kelly (27 at the time) handed over fake identification. The illegal marriage between the two was annulled in February 1995.

According to reports by NPR, prosecutors in New York filed a new charge against R. Kelly. They allegedly found that on the day before his wedding to Aaliyah, Kelly and others in his circle bribed a public official in Illinois to create a fake ID for her for the wedding certificate to state that she was 18.
His relationship with the Miss You hitmaker has been controversial from the get-go. Aaliyah went on to record her controversial hit song Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number which was written by R. Kelly.
The popular song was about a young woman being in love with an older man.

His illegal relationship with the deceased singer came to light in the six-part docu-series, Surviving R. Kelly where R. Kelly’s former acquaintances, family members and colleagues, explained that he met Aaliyah when she was just 12 years old and that they were in a secret relationship.
R. Kelly has been in jail since July, following his arrest on charges including child pornography and enticement of a minor.
