WATCH: Emily Blunt tells SA's Margaret Gardiner about the day Meryl Streep 'fell' on set
Cape Town – Former Miss Universe and Hollywood correspondent, Margaret Gardiner sat down with Emily Blunt to talk about her role as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns.
The film is set in 1930s depression-era London and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. Mary Poppins re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack, uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.
During her interview with Margaret, Emily speaks about taking on the daunting role. She also shares an on-set anecdote about co-star Meryl Streep.
Speaking about taking on the role Emily said that she was nervous at first but that she knew she wanted to do it: "I was nervous. How do I go about creating my own version of this completely iconic character played originally by somebody as iconic as Julie Andrews? That was the initial fear.”
Emily continues: “She's such an exquisite character so much fun and the singing and the dancing and the spectacle of it all was just a magical world to be in.”
Speaking about working alongside Meryl Streep, Emily says that she is such fun: "During a day of shooting she turned to the kids and said, 'Hey kids do you want to see me do a pratfall. And the kids were like yeah! She literally went from vertical to flat on her face," Emily recalls.
