Cape Town - South African director Oliver Hermanus' latest cinematic masterpiece, Moffie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last week.

Variety's Guy Lodge called it "the best film I've seen at Venice this year", whilst The Guardian's Xan Brooks said the film "crawls right under your skin".

The film, which was also nominated for the Golden Lion Award at the festival, has been praised for exposing toxic masculinity on an international stage in a time when South Africans are taking a powerful stand against the abuse of women and children in the country.

"Silence and repression of trauma permeates our society. We are having a huge conversation now about gender-based violence... about how men treat women," Oliver told AFP in an interview.

Next the film will be heading to London where it will compete in the Best Film category at this year's 63rd BFI London Film Festival.

In a beautifully edited video by Shaun Smit, Channel24 can now give readers a unique view of the cast and crew's weekend in Venice during the festival. (Watch it above)

Moffie, by Portobello Productions and Penzance Films, is directed by Oliver Hermanus and also written by Oliver and Jack Sidey.

The film is based on the book by Andre-Carl van der Merwe and is produced by Eric Abraham and Jack Sidey, and co-produced by Thérèsa Ryan van Graan. Moffie stars Kai Luke Brummer in his first film lead performance as well as a cast of sixteen young actors, many of whom make their feature film debut.
