The festive season kicks off at SA cinemas this weekend

Cape Town – Twas weeks before Christmas and someone’s out to steal your cheer. It’s the mean old Grinch in a cinema near you.

Benedict Cumberbatch voices the iconic Dr Seuss character in a reimagining of the classic tale – a grumpy Grinch plots to ruin Christmas for the village of Whoville.

Also showing: Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg in a family dramedy, Keira Knightley in biopic based upon the life of a French novelist Colette, and a drama about a man who discovers he has the gift of healing.

Here are the 4 new films releasing in SA cinemas today:

Our rating: 3/5

Short review: Anchored by a typically excellent Rose Byrne, Instant Family is a solid family dramedy that delivers both laughs and sentimentality in equal measure and with a dose of more grounded humanity than one might usually expect from such a film.

Movie: The Healer

Our rating: 2/5

Short review: With 100% of its profits going to a charity for kids with cancer, it’s impossible not to highly recommend paying to see the Healer. I’m just not sure you actually need to watch it...
