Steve McQueen didn't want Viola Davis wearing a wig in Widows

Cape Town - Director Steve McQueen apparently denied Viola Davis' request to wear a wig for her role in new heist movie Widows because he wanted the Oscar winner to be recognised onscreen.

Seeing that the movie is about female empowerment McQueen wanted Viola to stand out and prove that she is worthy of more leading roles.

In the film Viola plays Veronica, the wife of a charismatic thief Harry, how has to survive without him after his death.

Widows opens in SA cinemas on Friday, 9 November.
