SA EXCLUSIVE: Alicia Vikander is obsessed with Cape Town after five-month stay

On 5 March, Channel24 flew to London in an SA exclusive to meet the cast of the adventure film, Tomb Raider. Kirstin Buick sat down with Alicia Vikander to chat about her action-packed new film, being a bad-ass female role model – and how much she loved her time in SA.

London -  It’s a far cry from the sun-soaked climate she was used to in the months she spent scaling mountains in Cape Town in her Lara Croft get-up.

But at the swanky Corinthia Hotel in the heart of London, Alicia Vikander has swapped her cargo pants and tank top for a simple warm black sweater and feminine skirt – and she’s ready to chat to us about her juicy new role.

The role is a major change of pace for Alicia (pronounced Ah-lee-see-yah, by the way) after making a name for herself in a series of indie and arthouse films like The Danish Girl, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. But for Alicia, the new challenge was a welcomed one.

“Yes, I grew up in Sweden with a mom who was an actress in European art house films, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’ve always run to the theatres to watch big action adventures,” she tells Channel24.

About the Mother City, Alicia said: “I was a very lucky person because I got to spend five months in Cape Town shooting this film and I absolutely love it.”

She added: “And the people, above anything – we had such a huge local crew on this film, and they were so professional and so lovely, and also, it’s a wonderful way to get introduced to a new city.”
