Oscar-winning director Peter Ramsey coming to SA for Cape Town International Animation Festival

Cape Town - Proudly presented by Animation SA, the star-studded programme has been announced for the eighth Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF), which takes place from 8 to 10 March 2019 at the River Club in Observatory, Cape Town.

The CTIAF has become renowned for presenting world-class content, from animated films to insightful workshops and masterclasses as well as providing a unique platform to engage with global industry leaders. It also hosts business-to-business sessions, producer events, networking opportunities and government panel discussions in addition to student competitions, a family programme and an outreach initiative.

The line-up of speakers includes Academy Award-winning producer Aron Warner and Academy Award-winning director, Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse).

Other international speakers include John Paul Giancarlo, Tomoya Imai, David Prescott of Skydance and Archita Ghosh, Executive Producer at Montreal indie animation studio e.d. films.

There’ll be a unique opportunity to learn from teachers at the prestigious Gobelins School of Animation who will be presenting masterclasses and panel discussions at CTIAF.

South African illustrator and animator Marc Moynihan is this year's theme artist. His work is unique in style and he has always had a passion for drawn animation and picture books.

Other exciting speakers to look out for include Furio Tedeschi, Tasania Parsadh, Vanessa Sinden, Ree Treweek, Isaac Mogajane, Caroline Vos,  Lesego Vorster, Goddy Roodt, Somtochukwu Ajuluchukwu and many more.

FUN FOR YOUNG VISITORS

Acclaimed films to be presented include a series of African premieres such as Mamoru Hosoda’s Golden Globe nominated Mirai as well as Makoto Shinkai’s romantic fantasy drama Your Name.

Hot off its debut on BBC One on Christmas Day, the CTIAF presents Magic Light Pictures’ and Triggerfish Animation Studio’s Zog, directed by Academy Award nominated director Max Lang and adapted from the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

A keen but accident-prone dragon learns how to become a dragon at Dragon School! This will be followed by Studio Ponoc’s animation anthology Modest Heroes, with three tales of modest heroes of our time. (Programme starts at 20:00 in the Outdoor Cinema).

Primary and high school learners can enjoy a class of Gesture Drawing for Animation on Friday at 15:00, while on Saturday there are two sessions of the popular hands-on stop-motion workshops at 14:30 and 16:00, to create your own animation, one step at a time. (Bring an ipad or smartphone with you for this workshop).

On Saturday, 9 March at 10:00, catch the Short Film Kids Collection, with a wonderful array of animated short films to engage, enchant and inspire young minds.

On Sunday, 10 March at 10:00 there’s some animation fun with a spin – join a Zoetrope and Animation Scope Worskhop to learn about one of the first ever animation methods.

Following the incredible success of the past two years of the CTIAF Outreach Programme at the Isivivana centre in Khayelitsha, there will again be screenings of films, drawing classes and various workshops to teach the fundamentals of animation.

BOOKING AND TICKET INFO

A full festival pass (valid 8 to 10 March) costs R600. A day pass costs R280 and student passes cost R300 (tickets include access to all events and masterclasses). Tickets to screenings at the Outdoor Cinema cost R50 and access to the stop motion and Zoetrope workshops are free.

Seats at all events are based on a first-come, first-serve basis. All events require a ticket for access, except the workshops at the clubhouse.
