Here's why Awkwafina's Golden Globes win was so historic

Cape Town – American actress Awkwafina took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Film for her fantastic performance in The Farewell.

Other nominees in the category included: Ana de Armas for Knives Out, Cate Blanchett for Where'd You Go, Bernadette?, Beanie Feldstein for Booksmart and Emma Thompson for Late Night.

The historic moment in the award show's long run made her the first winner of Asian descent in that category.

More historic still is the fact that Awkwafina is only the sixth woman of Asian descent to be nominated in the Lead actress in a Musical or Comedy category.

According to CNN, the others were Machiko Kyo (1956's The Teahouse of the August Moon), Miyoshi Umeki (1961's Flower Drum Song), Yvonne Elliman (1973's Jesus Christ Superstar), and Constance Wu (2018's Crazy Rich Asians).

It wasn't a notable year for films directed by or about women at the famous award show, with The Farewell's director Lulu Wang — and all other women — being left out of the directing category.

In her speech, the multitalented performer mentioned the director and thanked her, saying in part: "Thank you, and most importantly, to Lulu Wang, our incredible director. You gave me this chance, the chance of a lifetime, and you taught me so much. And just filming this story, being with you, was incredible."
