Cape Town – A brand new Spider-Man swings into cinemas this weekend.
The fresh take on the friendly neighbourhood superhero has not only earned rave reviews, it has also been nominated for a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award, and an Annie Award.
This time around Brooklyn teen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his reality and crosses paths with his counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat to all reality.
Also showing: Jennifer Lopez returns to her romantic comedy roots, a post-apocalyptic adventure film by Peter Jackson, and a miniature horse wants to be a reindeer.
Here are the 4 new films releasing in SA cinema:
Movie: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Our rating: 5/5
Short review: Who knew that Sony was going to bring out a Spider-Man animation that’s one of the best movies of the year?
Movie: Second Act
Our rating: 2/5
Short review: Second Act feels very much like a dated carbon copy of Maid in Manhattan with an older Jennifer Lopez and a slightly updated storyline.
Movie: Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer
Our rating: 1/5
Short review: Only go watch this animated Christmas movie if you really, really have to.
Movie: Mortal Engines
Our rating: 3/5
Short review: Beautifully designed and assembled, it may be, but Mortal Engines is only ever really fun when it leans into being a massively silly steampunk version of Star Wars. Fortunately, it does that just enough to get away with it.
