Harvey Weinstein is getting medical treatment after complaining about heart palpitations and chest pains while he was en route to New York correctional facility Rikers Island after receiving the verdict in his rape and sexual assault trial, E! News reports.
Following the verdict, an unsteady Weinstein was helped to his feet by officers and led away to be transported to the island prison to await sentencing on 11 March. But the Hollywood producer was instead swiftly admitted to Bellevue, the correctional facilities’ medical centre for prisoners.
After Weinstein’s verdict was delivered, his lawyer Donna Rotunno said that "the fight is not over", further describing the day as "bittersweet".
"Harvey is unbelievably strong. He took it like a man. He knows that we will continue to fight for him and knows that this is not over," Rotunno said, speaking about her client.
Although Weinstein maintained his innocence during what was termed the #MeToo trial, the 67-year-old was found guilty by a jury of seven men and five women on two charges – rape in the third degree and a criminal sexual act in the first degree.
He was however found not guilty on one count of rape in the first degree and two counts of predatory sexual assault, CNN reports.
Rotunno told the press that her client was fine, but wouldn’t further elaborate on his condition.
Weinstein’s verdict has been hailed as "the beginning of a new era of justice".
The former Hollywood heavyweight still faces four sexual assault charges in Los Angeles, BBC reports. He could face up to 25 years in prison on the sexual assault conviction and four years for rape.
