6 local movies to binge-watch this weekend

Cape Town - The South African film industry is thriving, and there’s no better way to appreciate it than by watching these movies on demand on Showmax, DStv Now and Netflix.

1. Beyond the River (Showmax)

Despite coming from very different worlds, in 2014 Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks won gold in the tough Dusi Canoe Marathon. This movie tells their amazing story, which will resonate with every South African.

2. Love By Chance (Showmax)

Two South African actors are working hard to break into the Hollywood scene - so hard that dating is the last thing on their minds. But love has a way of making itself heard in this sweet romcom.

3. Johnny Is Nie Dood Nie (Showmax)

On the day that Johannes Kerkorrel commits suicide, friends have a braai and reminisce about their past, their fight against apartheid and the Border War, and the music they love.

4. Stone Cold Jane Austen (Showmax)

Get ready for the greatest rock story you've never heard in this hilarious mockumentary, starring Jon Savage and Rob van Vuuren. They think they are the country's hardest-working, coolest, most hardcore and most legendary Afrikaans music act. But in reality, they’re not even close.

5. Jonathan: Die Movie (DStv Now)

When aspiring comedian Jonathan gets kicked out of his parents’ house, he has to figure out how to make a living. He dons a high-vis vest and takes up a position in a shopping centre parking lot, hoping to make enough cash to get by.

6. Catching Feelings (Netflix)

Amid growing tensions in their marriage, a Johannesburg professor and his journalist wife find their lives upended by the dramatic entrance of a famous, hard-partying author. Written and directed by, and starring Kagiso Lediga, opposite the luminous Pearl Thusi.
