17-year-old newcomer cast as the lead in West Side Story

Cape Town - Steven Spielberg has cast his Maria for the remake of West Side Story.

17-year-old high school student Rachel Zegler will make her acting debut alongside Ansel Elgort who will play Tony.

According to Variety the Rachel saw the casting call on Twitter and submitted a video of herself singing.

Speaking about landing the role Rachel said she is thrilled to be playing the iconic role. 

She tweeted alongside a story of the cast announcement: “It’s official! So thankful to have the opportunity to work with one of my favourite directors and this incredible cast! And to be able to learn from the best (and one of my icons) @TheRitaMoreno is just BEYOND. Surreal!

Rounding up the principal Sharks cast are: Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo and Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino reports Deadline.

Rita Moreno who played Anita in the original film will play the role of Valentina - a reconceived version of a corner store owner.

The film is scheduled to begin shooting later this year.
