After much back and forth, Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have officially cancelled their wedding amid coronavirus concerns.
The couple was set to marry on Friday, 29 May, at The Chapel Royal, St James's Palace, with a reception at Buckingham Palace afterwards. However, with Italy going into lockdown, and many of Edoardo's family having to come in from Italy as he descends from Italian aristocracy, a cloud of doubt has loomed over the wedding for quite some time.
Now, after the coronavirus was declared a pandemic with the situation having gotten significantly worse worldwide, Beatrice and Edoardo have cancelled their plans altogether, reports HELLO! Magazine.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson released a statement earlier this week saying, "In line with government advice for the UK and beyond, the couple are reviewing their arrangements for 29 May."
According to the palace, the couple is taking two very important aspects into account as has been advised across the globe to flatten the cloud and reducing "large gatherings of people" and protecting "the wellbeing of older family members," i.e. her grandmother who also happens to be Her Majesty, The Queen.
The 93-year-old monarch has, after all, cancelled many upcoming engagements as the Covid-19 virus continues to spread.
"Therefore, the planned reception in the Buckingham Palace Gardens will not take place," the statement continued.
"The couple will carefully consider government advice before deciding whether a private marriage might take place amongst a small group of family and friends," they added, also saying, "Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi are very much looking forward to getting married but are equally aware of the need to avoid undertaking any unnecessary risks in the current circumstances."
