Prince William could soon join the front-line in fighting the coronavirus

When Prince William and Kate Middleton visited staff working at the National Health Service (NHS) 111 to thank them for their service amid the coronavirus pandemic, he reportedly admitted a longing to return as an air ambulance pilot.

The couple shared images from their visit on Instagram writing: "The last few weeks, and more recent days have been understandably concerning with the continuing spread of coronavirus. But it’s at times like this when we realise just how much the NHS represents the very best of our country and society – people from all backgrounds and walks of life with different experiences and skills, pulling together for the common good.

They added: "They need our support as much as we need theirs. All of us have a part to play if we’re going to protect the most vulnerable."

Prince Charles was just recently released from isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus, while the queen and Prince Philip have been self-isolating. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are doing the same with their children at their home in Norfolk.

A source told The Sun though that Prince William wants to do his part to fight Covid-19 – and expressed this upon his visit to the NHS.

"William has been seriously considering returning as an air ambulance pilot to help in the current pandemic," they said.

"He knows the whole country is doing its bit and he wants to help. But it’s complicated as he was originally grounded from the job so that he could become a senior working royal.

"That role is even more important now given that Charles has been ill, Harry has walked away with Meghan and Andrew has been effectively barred from public life. But William is very keen to do anything he can to help."

Prince William flew as a medic for two years with the East Anglian Air Ambulance before stepping down.

He reportedly told Tracy Pidgeon, a call-handler and governance lead at the NHS, that he "misses the helicopter, being on the front line".
