Prince Charles almost risked losing his kingship after he provoked his parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, with an "unroyal" trait, experts claim.
They believed they couldn’t trust the Prince of Wales because of his outspoken nature, according to royal biographer Angela Levin, Express UK reports.
The 71-year-old often publicly expresses his concerns and views on the environment and conservationism, which was seen as controversial in the royal family, who traditionally remain neutral.
"He annoyed his parents, actually," Levin says in a new documentary, The Queen and Prince Charles: Mother and Son.
"They felt he was weak, they felt they couldn’t trust him to be king, that he had all these funny ideas about spiritualism and plastic in the sea."
Over the years, royal fans have watched Charles advocate for causes close to his heart; from climate change to organic farming and rainforests, The Guardian reports.
He recently met climate activist Greta Thunberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
But the heir to the throne’s passion didn’t always appease other royals or the public. If anything it sparked outrage because of its direct association with the political sphere, says royal historian Kate Williams.
"Increasingly people started talking about Prince Charles as a bit eccentric," she said.
