- Meghan Markle gave a powerful speech to the graduating class of her alma mater recently.
- "I know that you know that black lives matter," she said, urging them to stand up against racism and inequality.
- The Duchess of Sussex reflected on her own experiences growing and said: "I'm so sorry that you have to grow up in a world where this is still present."
"George Floyd's life mattered and Breonna Taylor's life mattered and Philando Castile's life mattered and Tamir Rice's life mattered," Meghan Markle says in a new video as she congratulates the graduation class of 2020.
In a video message shared by with graduates at Immaculate Heart High School, the Duchess of Sussex's alma mater, according to Sky News, she talks about the current climate in the US and how she can't go without addressing it.
She discussed her childhood and growing up experiencing and seeing racism.
"The first thing I want to say to you is that I'm sorry. I'm so sorry that you have to grow up in a world where this is still present," she says. "I remember the curfew and I remember rushing back home and on that drive home, seeing ash fall from the sky and smelling the smoke and seeing the smoke billow out of buildings.
"I remember seeing men in the back of a van just holding guns and rifles. I remember pulling up to the house and seeing the tree, that had always been there, completely charred. And those memories don't go away."
She goes on to say: "I know that you know that black lives matter," before urging the graduates to stand with the movement.
"I am already excited for what you are going to do in the world," she encourages the class of 2020. "You are equipped, you are ready, we need you, and you are prepared."
She adds: "I am so eager to see what you're going to do, please know I am cheering you on all along the way, I am exceptionally proud of you and I am wishing you a huge congratulations on today – the start of all the impact you're going to make in the world as the leaders we all so deeply crave. Congratulations, ladies, and thank you in advance."
