Here's how the British royal family really feels about their lives chronicled in 'The Crown'

Cape Town – If you've ever watched Netflix's The Crown, you'll know the drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth while revealing intimate details about the British royals. 

From Prince Philip's alleged infidelity to Prince Charles's troubled childhood, showrunner, Peter Morgan doesn't shy away from documenting the more scandalous secrets – this, even though Queen Elizabeth probably has enough power to snap her fingers and have the show cancelled in a matter of seconds. 

Speaking to The Guardian's Charlotte Higgins, who spent a day on the set of The Crown, Peter Morgan who is the show's creator, writer and executive producer, admitted he often meets with the royal household – four times a year, to be exact. 

Peter described his sources as "people who are very high-ranking and very active within the organisation" while adding "respectfully, I tell them what I have in mind, and they brace themselves slightly". 

Many of the cast members have met with the British royals themselves as part of their research – Olivia Colman spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the time she "accidentally" ran into Queen Elizabeth too – but Peter and his team have another official royal informant that they consult before going ahead with most anything though.

David Rankin-Hunt, or as his known on set – "Major David" – has worked as part of the royal household for 33 years. Charlotte Higgins writes he's "a nattily dressed figure in tweeds and a tie" and "The Crown's dispenser of wisdom on matters royal, including bowing and curtseying and the fact that the Queen would never, ever say "cheers" when raising her glass (she would say absolutely nothing)". 

Major David says he was "anxious" about taking on the job but says he obtained approval from the family before explaining the royal household has actually taken a liking to the show. 

"Very senior members of the royal household have said to me, 'Oh, we love The Crown.' If there were some indication from on high that it was some kind of scandalous production, that might be reflected in their view, don't you think?" 

He said he doesn't really know if Queen Elizabeth herself watches the show, but we know, she's got a very different favourite series. 

She prefers police drama rather than the royal kind, binging The Bill whenever she can, according to a royal insider.
