Cape Town - Elton John has revealed that Princess Diana had quite the effect on gentlemen.

In an excerpt from his upcoming memoir, the 72-year-old singer shared an anecdote about Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone almost getting into a fistfight over the late Princess of Wales, Metro UK reports.

The incident happened at a London dinner party held for former Walt Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Elton was working on music for the 1994 film The Lion King at the time and attended the party with his partner David Furnish, PEOPLE reports.

"Straight away, Richard Gere and Diana seemed very taken with each other," the Rocket Man singer wrote.

Diana was separated from Prince Charles at the time and Richard had ended his relationship with Cindy Crawford, Mirror UK reports.

"I couldn’t help [but] notice a strange atmosphere in the room. Judging by the kind of looks he kept shooting them, Diana and Richard Gere’s newly blossoming friendship wasn’t going down well with Sylvester Stallone at all," Elton added.

According to him, Diana and Richard continued to chat well into the evening.

When it was time for dinner Elton recalled guests noticed that both Richard and Sylvester had disappeared so he asked his partner David to go and find them.

"It transpired that he’d discovered Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere in the corridor, squaring up to each other, apparently about to settle their differences over Diana by having a fistfight," he explained.

Apparently Sylvester attended the dinner with the sole purpose of meeting and romancing Diana.

The Rocky star reportedly stormed off after the incident while Diana was none the wiser.

According to Elton, Princess Di and Richard resumed their chat by the fireplace for the rest of the evening.
