Demi Lovato is getting candid about what led to her overdose.

The singer is making a return to the spotlight after a brief hiatus where she focussed on her mental and physical health.

Demi sat down with model Ashley Graham on her Pretty Big Deal podcast recently to chat about how she treated herself before her overdose in 2018.

The 27-year-old star revealed that her struggle with an eating disorder and extreme dieting led to her relapse.

"I’m tired of running myself into the ground with workouts and extreme dieting. I thought the past few years I was recovering from an eating disorder, when it actually was just completely falling into it," Demi told Ashley.

"And I just realised maybe my symptoms weren’t as obvious as before, but it was definitely an eating issue."

The singer also said the kind of people she surrounded herself with played a big part in her overdose.

"I think when you have certain people around you that are telling you certain things and that you should look a certain way, it makes it harder," she said.

"I was in that situation, and I was just running myself into the ground.

"I honestly think that’s kind of what led to everything happening over the past year. It was just me thinking I found recovery when I didn't, and then living this kind of lie and trying to tell the world I was happy with myself when I really wasn’t."

After Demi’s near-fatal overdose, she booked herself into a rehabilitation centre to deal with her mental and physical health. She also changed management teams and is now working with record executive Scooter Braun, according to Entertainment Tonight.

The star made her triumphant return to the spotlight with an emotional performance of her new song Anyone earlier this month at the Grammys, before performing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
