Cape Town - John Mayer was granted a temporary restraining order after an obsessed fan allegedly stalked and threatened him.

The 41-year-old musician recently filed papers in Los Angeles seeking a restraining order against Ryan Jeremy Knight, who’s from North Carolina, E! News reports.

The Half of My Heart singer claimed Knight (39) stalked him at first but things escalated in April when he started threatening him and members of his staff on social media, according to court documents.

"I've put many a Jew in the hospital," Knight allegedly told the singer on one occasion, Daily Mail reports. John’s 91-year-old father, Richard, is Jewish.

In the documents, the American singer-songwriter revealed that the threatening messages left him fearing for his life and in constant emotional distress, which led the judge to rule in his favour.

Knight was ordered to stay 30 metres away from the seven-time Grammy winner and his home, Fox News reports.

A hearing will be held in August to decide if the restraining order should be made permanent.
