Dennis Quaid, 65, confirms engagement to Laura Savoie, 26

Cape Town - Dennis Quaid, 65, is engaged to his long-term girlfriend Laura Savoie, 26.

The Parent Trap actor confirmed the news to Extra in Hawaii, where he was promoting his new film Midway, over the weekend.

Dennis told the American publication about the proposal: "I had the ring in my pocket. It has been kind of a month-and-a-half plan — I wanted it to be private."

He added: "She was actually taking a selfie of us, and I put the ring in front and said, 'Will you marry me?' And then she fell down."

The couple has been dating for several months, according to PEOPLE. They were previously snapped together in late August while holidaying in Lake Como, Italy.

According to E! Laura is currently working towards her PhD in accounting at the University of Texas at Austin and expects to graduate in 2021.

Dennis has been married three times and has three children. The new engagement has many making comparisons to The Parent Trap. Dennis starred in the 1998 remake of the 1951 Disney classic alongside Elaine Hendrix.

Elaine played Meredith Blake — the 26-year-old fiancée of the 65-year-old's character Nick Parker. She was eventually chased away from the relationship by Nick's twin daughters Hallie and Annie, who were memorably played by Lindsay Lohan.

Elaine took advantage of the coincidental age of her ex-co-star's new fiancée to make her joke about the engagement news, saying: "Watch out for those twins" along with a retweet of the story.
