Cape Town – Armie Hammer is The Hollywood Reporter’s latest cover star and is using it as a platform to share his thoughts.
The 31-year-old shares everything from his thoughts on double standards in Hollywood, his latest film Call Me By Your Name and his family.
On double standards
As Hollywood faces an influx of sexual misconduct allegations against various well-known names in the industry, Hammer weighed in on the subject by comparing the different treatment of two men who have been accused namely his Birth of a Nation director Nate Parker and Oscar winner Casey Affleck.
“Nate had the stuff in his past, which is heinous and tough to get beyond. I get that. But that was when he was 18, and now he's in directors jail. At the same time, the guy who went and won an Academy Award has three cases of sexual assault against him.”
Clarifying his statement, Hammer adds that he is not saying Parker – who was acquitted of a rape charge by an 18-year-old female student in 1999 - should have been let off easy at all, however he fails to understand why Affleck – who was sued by two women for sexual harassment in 2010 - was let off so easy.
The Birth of a Nation actor concluded by voicing his support towards victims who have come forward with allegations.
On Call Me By Your Name
Hammer is the first to say, his latest film was totally out of his comfort zone and he initially wasn’t on board.
Hammer told THR’s Seth Abramovitch: “[The film] is one of the most beautiful scripts I've ever read — I cried. [But] there were things in the movie I’d never done on film.”
After some convincing however, Hammer was on board, but that wasn’t the only bump in the road the film would see.
The film received criticism from actor James Woods for sexualising underage relationships with adults however, Hammer says it is simply not true.
“We weren't trying to make some salacious, predatory movie...
“Would it make me uncomfortable if I had a 17-year-old child dating someone in their mid-20s? Probably. But this isn't a normal situation: The younger guy goes after the older guy. The dynamic is not older predator versus younger boy.”
On his family
Hammer is married to former E! News correspondent Elizabeth Chambers. They have a daughter named Harper, 3, and a 10-month-old son named Ford.
Speaking of his relationship with Champers, Hammer says they were friends for three years before they realised they belonged together.
The couple married in May 2010.
Of the couple, director Tom Ford – who met them shortly after their wedding - said: “I could not take my eyes off of them. He [Hammer] looked at her the entire evening. I remember being charmed by how earnest he was and how in love he was with her [Chambers].”
